Biography
The Bronx Library Association was officially established on November 26, 1975, as a forum to encourage the exchange of information and resources between academic, public, special, and school libraries in The Bronx. The momentum behind the formation of the Association, however, began after the first Bronx Library Conference, March 24, 1975, held at the Snuff Mill restaurant of the New York Botanical Garden and co-sponsored by The Bronx County Historical Society. During its heyday, The Bronx Library Association hosted well-attended annual meetings for members as well as regular open houses at a wide selection of area schools, libraries, and institutions of higher learning. These activities, however, ceased after 1984. Although the Association was briefly revived in 1990, this revival did not endure.
Description/Scope and Content
The collection consists of administrative documents, clippings, correspondence, event material, meeting minutes, newsletters, and press releases documenting the formation and activities of The Bronx Library Association, mostly during the period 1975–1984.
Provenance
The Bronx Library Association Records were donated to The Bronx County Historical Society in May 2013 by Dorothy Henderson, a member of the organization.
