Administrative History

The Baychester Nereid Taxpayers and Civic Association began in 1926 as the Bathgate Taxpayers Association to advocate for the rights and well-being of homeowners in the northeast part of The Bronx. In the early twentieth century, much of the northeast and north central part of The Bronx was still known locally as having once belonged to the sprawling Bathgate estate. As time went on, however, "Bathgate" began to be more exclusivley associated with the neighborhood immediately around Bathgate Avenue, near Crotona Park. As a result, the Bathgate Taxpayers Association officially renamed itself in 1969 to better reflect the geographic area of The Bronx in which it was situated.

Throughout its existence, the Baychester Nereid Taxpayers and Civic Association consistently organized against what its members deemed unreasonable tax increases and for improvement and upkeep of local infrastructure.

Description/Scope and Content

The Baychester Nereid Taxpayers and Civic Association records are arranged in five series:

2) Minutes, which is comprised of meeting minutes for the organization for the majority of years between 1926 and 2002, barring 1938–1952 and a few scattered others.

3) Correspondence, which includes incoming and outgoing correspondence between the organization and other organizations, individuals, elected officials, and municipal departments.

4) Neighborhood Issues, which contains documentation of neighborhood issues in the northeast Bronx and local campaigns waged by the organization.

5) Miscellaneous.
