Biography
Local Boards were established in each of the five boroughs as part of the New York City consolidation of 1898. The original Charter designated 22 districts of local improvements, each under the oversight of a Local Board, and these lined up with the city’s state senatorial districts. The 1901 Charter increased the districts of local improvement to 25, and in 1918 they were reduced to 24 to align with municipal aldermanic districts. Local Boards advised the Borough President primarily on local land use, zoning, and service delivery and were comprised of the Borough President and each alderman in a given district. Since the Charter revision of 1938, the Local Boards, or Community Boards as they have come to be called, have greatly increased in number—there are now 59 Community Boards, of which 12 are in The Bronx—and have become more open in membership, though they still serve the same advisory functions as they have since their creation.
Description/Scope and Content
The collection contains 5 Minutes Books from the Local Board for Districts 21–24 during the period 1901–1933. These record deliberations of the Local Board about land-use designation, zoning, infrastructure improvement, etc.
Provenance
Materials in this collection were recovered by Society staff at some point in the 1990s or early 2000s when a building that had been used to store municipal archival material was being repurposed.
