Biography
Daniel Hauben is an American artist working in both oil paint and chalk pastel. Hauben was born in The Bronx and has spent the vast majority of his life in the borough. Much of Hauben's artistic inspiration comes from The Bronx, and many of his artistic landscapes play on the rich urban scenes of the borough.
Daniel Hauben and his wife and fellow artist, Judith Lane, started the Bronx Artist Documentary Project in 2013. During the period 2013–2016 the Bronx Artist Documentary Project brought over 100 Bronx artists together. The project involved 30 Bronx photographers producing visually stunning shots of 78 Bronx visual artists in the midst of their creative processes. The main objective of the project was to highlight the creative energy of The Bronx’s highly diverse artists and photographers. It produced exhibits, digital media, a book, and a documentary.
Description/Scope and Content
The collection consists of four series, one comprising six subseries associated with the Bronx Artist Documentary Project; another including two subseries of photographic slides (Daniel Hauben's photography of New York City and of his own artwork); a third comprising prints and originals of Daniel Hauben's artwork; and a fourth containing general material from Daniel Hauben's artistic career.
Provenance
The Daniel Hauben papers were donated to The Bronx County Historical Society in two initial installments by Daniel Hauben in April 2021. A third installment was donated to the Society by Daniel Hauben on August 23, 2021. A fourth installment was donated to the Society by Daniel Hauben on September 27, 2021.
