Administrative History
For more than sixty years, Elias Karmon, also known as “Mr. Bronx,” played an important role in supporting the development of businesses and community organizations in The Bronx. Born in 1910 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan as Elias Kaminsky, Karmon’s parents were immigrants from Eastern Europe who worked in the garment industry. Karmon graduated from New York University with a degree in Commercial Science in 1932, during the height of the Great Depression. Due to the poor economic conditions in New York City, Karmon was “forced” into working in the wholesale clothing industry. After his first business in this industry failed, Karmon and his partner decided to establish a new clothing store in The Bronx. When Karmon’s business partner failed to show up to co-sign on a lease for the new store, which was located on Prospect Avenue, Karmon decided to go into business by himself. Karmon’s store, Hollywood Clothes, opened at the end of the 1930s and eventually became an important business in the Morrisania community of The Bronx. Karmon made custom made suits for many prominent Bronx individuals, which included judges, politicians, and other professionals. Until the store was closed in the 1970s. Karmon also served as president of The Bronx Chamber of Commerce for four consecutive years and also held positions as Treasurer, Second Vice President, and First Vice President of the organization. He was also founder of the Prospect Avenue Merchant’s Association, which served as a branch of The Bronx Chamber of Commerce.
When Hollywood Clothes was first established in The Bronx, Morrisania mostly consisted of second-generation Jewish and German Americans. However, by the mid-1930s, many African Americans were migrating to The Bronx, particularly Morrisania, from crowded living conditions of Harlem and other areas of New York City. As a result, the store also became popular among members of the Black community located in The Bronx. Benny Carter, a Black jazz saxophonist from Harlem, ordered eighteen suits from Karmon, which were shipped to Detroit. Another regular client of Karmon was Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who lived in Morrisania. During that time, Powell was a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) student at City College in New York City.
As Karmon’s clientele increasingly consisted of more African Americans and Latinos (especially Puerto Ricans), he continued to promote an “open door policy” towards all customers that entered his store. He also supported and lobbied for a variety of African Americans and Puerto Rican organizations in The Bronx. During a time period when it was difficult for many African Americans and Puerto Ricans to find employment due to discriminatory hiring practices, Karmon provided jobs at Hollywood Clothes to Blacks and Latinos who lived in Morrisania and the surrounding area. In 1943, Karmon, members of the Democratic Party, and the media lobbied the state of New York not to extradite a Bronx African American teenager to South Carolina, where he faced dubious charges of assaulting a Dillon City shop owner. After much pressure from Karmon and other residents of The Bronx, a judge decided that the teenager would not be extradited. Karmon also supported many Black and Latino politicians from The Bronx. In 1952, Karmon managed the campaign of Walter H. Gladwin, a State Senator and the first African American to be elected to a public office in The Bronx. He was also very involved in the concurrent campaign of Felipe N. Torres, the first Puerto Rican to represent The Bronx in the New York State Assembly. Karmon contributed his time and money to many other subsequent African American and Puerto Rican elected officials from The Bronx.
In addition to lobbying and supporting many African American and Puerto Rican individuals and politicians from The Bronx, Karmon was also active in many organizations that assisted people of color. Some of these organizations include Forrest Neighborhood House, the various branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in the borough, The Bronx YMCA, the Bronx Boys’ Club, East Bronx Community Council, Council of Spanish American Organizations of Greater New York, South Bronx Kids, Prospect Avenue Little League, and Mount Carmel Baptist Church. He was also a founding member and former chairman of The Bronx Branch of the Urban League, which was established in the borough in 1950. In 1984, the New York Urban League cited Karmon as a Charter Member and Founder of The Bronx Office and honored him for his service.
During the 1970s, The Bronx went through a period of de-investment, capital flight, red-lining, and deindustrialization. Apartment buildings, which were once full of families, were abandoned, and, in many cases burned down by arsonists (who in many cases were paid to do so by landlords). Karmon, who owned residential and commercial real estate throughout The Bronx, sold very few of his properties during this time period. It is telling that none of his buildings were destroyed during this time period. Karmon also served as a board member of the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO), which was one of the first organizations established to help rebuild the South Bronx. Karmon is one of the founders of the Ponce de Leon Federal Bank, which was one of the few institutions that continued to provide financial services to South Bronx residents in the 1970s and 1980s.
Toward the end of his life, Karmon resided in the Pelham Parkway neighborhood of The Bronx. He continued to oversee the operations of his businesses, EMK Enterprises and others, which supported his commercial and residential real estate properties in The Bronx. He frequently hosted fund-raising birthday parties for himself that were attended by Bronx politicians and other leaders of the borough. He would donate the funds raised at these events to cultural and social organizations in The Bronx.
Throughout his long career, Karmon collected and documented clippings, photographs, and other memorabilia on a wide range of organizations, events, and people in The Bronx. This collection, more than anything else, is the fruit of his labor.
Description/Scope and Content
The Elias Karmon papers are arranged in the following six series:
1) Subject Files, which consists of alphabetically arranged subject files on a wide range of individuals, organizations, and businesses, most specifically associated with The Bronx;
2) Scrapbooks, which is comprised of binders of photographs and documents created by Karmon from his involvement in a variety of Bronx organizations;
3) Miscellaneous Corporate, Organizational, and Business Material;
4) Framed Photographs;
5) Plaques and Awards;
6) Personal Notebooks, which includes notebooks kept by Karmon on personal readings and news items of interest, most from the 1930s.
In 2020, during the processing and organization of the Karmon papers, the Society’s librarian and archivist, Dr. Steven Payne, removed approximately 5.0 cubic feet of material to constitute two small archival collections: the Urban League, Bronx Branch records (MS-ULBX); and the Pelham Parkway Jewish Center records (MS-PPJC).
Provenance
The Elias Karmon papers were donated after Mr. Karmon’s death by his daughter and son-in-law, Charles and Sharon Landsberg, in 2010.
