Biography

Born on July 13,1962, Jesús Lebrón is a longtime gay activist and community organizer. Raised in the South Bronx, Jesus is one of six children born to first generation Puerto Rican parents, Amelia Cruz and William Lebrón.

Jesús obtained his Bachelors Degree in Sociology from the College of Staten Island and his Master's Degree from the Hunter College School of Social Work. Jesús has worked with various populations, including LGBT families, homeless, and people living with HIV/AIDS.

A leading activist in the grassroots movement for marriage equality since 1996, Jesús is founder of Marriage Equality NY (1998) and Co-Founder of Marriage Equality USA (2001). In 2003, Jesús, with fellow activist and close friend Brendan Fay, co-founded The Civil Marriage Trail Project, an organization that brought same-sex couples across borders for legal marriage. Among the couples were Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer, whose U.S. Supreme Court case (2013) led to the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act, a law passed by Congress in 1996 authorizing states to reject the legal status of marriages of same-sex couples conducted in other states or countries.

Jesús was a leading organizer with the Coalition for An Impartial Civilian Complaint Review Board, an organization that successfully helped remove Reverend Rubén Díaz, Sr. from the Civilian Complaint Review Board for his public denunciations of LGBT people. Jesús is Co-Founder of Gay & Lesbian Advocates for Change, an ad hoc organization that was involved in activist and electoral politics from 1997 to 1999, and Gays Against Bush (2004), an organization that raised awareness about the negative policies of President George Bush and the Republican administration during the Republican National Convention of 2004.

For eight years Jesús worked as manager of the Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop, the world’s first LGBTQ bookstore. He has volunteered with GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis), ACT-UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power), Lavender and Green Alliance and St.Pat’s For All.

Jesús presently lives in Manhattan and is employed as social worker for the City of New York. Jesús can be reached at queerlib@gmail.com.
