Administrative History

The Women's Republican Club of Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil started in 1921 and maintained close relationships with the West Bronx Republican Club and the West Bronx Young Republican Club. It was particularly active during the presidential campaign for Dwight D. Eisenhower.

In 1957, in alliance with the West Bronx Young Republican Club, the Women's Republican Club of Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil helped start the Committee for a Stronger Republican Party in the 12th Assembly District of The Bronx in an attempt to unseat the firmly entrenched local Republican Party machine. Ultimately, the Club’s efforts were unsuccessful, as the Republican Party not only in The Bronx but nationwide lurched increasingly to the right and stifled internal dissent throughout the 1960s and 1970s. (Indeed, the Democratic Party exhibited similar trends during this period of U.S. history.) At any rate, when all was said and done, by 1965 the Women's Republican Club of Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil had effectively ceased its activity.

Description/Scope and Content

The collection consists of two series, the first comprising administration documents, like charter material, clippings, events and meeting notices, and minutes, and the second comprising scrapbooks.
