Administrative History
The Listener, later called The Listener-News, was a Black newspaper published in the Morrisania section of The Bronx starting in 1938 and running until perhaps 1940. According to the newspaper itself, it was dedicated “to the Ideals of Negro Youth—for equal Opportunities and Justice—A chance to live.” It describes itself as “a non-partisan, clean, courageous Journal, shedding light on the news and views affecting your group and promoting a true spirit of Unity, Peace, Concord and Cooperation.” The Listener was published every Saturday by The Listener Publishing Company, which was located at 797 E. 166th Street. L. C. Davidson, was the Editor, Leroy Freeman was the Managing Editor, and L. O. Tucker the Secretary. L. C. Davidson was the father of Jesse Davidson, the donor of the collection.
Description/Scope and Content
The collection comprises very fragile copies of The Listener published throughout 1939. The newspaper itself likely ran into the early 1940s, but these editions, so far as we know, are no longer in existence.
Provenance
The Listener-News collection was donated to The Bronx County Historical Society by Jesse Davidson, the son of the editor, on June 10, 2004.
