Biography

Jean Theodor Ludwig Heinrich Dietrich (known as Henry L. Dietrich) was born on April 27, 1834, in Kassel Hesse, Germany (Prussia). Henry left Germany and came to the U.S. on April 4, 1854, when he was 20 years old. He became a naturalized citizen five years later. On May 15, 1861, at the age of 27, Henry enlisted in the 39th Regiment, New York Infantry volunteers in the United States' services during the Civil War and served for two years. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on October 18, 1862. On May 2, 1863 Henry was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, and he was subsequently discharged on July 1, 1863. Henry married Barbara Bauer on May 1, 1868. They had four surviving children: Carl Heinrich Thomas (Carl), Frederic Ludwig, Henry, Jr., and Emma Emile Barbara. The family lived at 712 East 166th Street, located in what was then a rural area of Morrisania, now a part of The BronxHenry’s profession was that of a bookkeeper. He died on January 1, 1921.

Henry's son Frederic Ludwig married Anna Mutzberg on February 12, 1899. Anna was born on March 5, 1877, in Elberfeld, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Her father, Carl Wilhelm Herman Mutzberg, immigrated to America with his family around 1886.

Henry, Frederic's father, had become an artist working professionally in both watercolor and lithography. Frederic, for his part, created illustrations for magazines, designed cigar labels, and painted watercolor landscapes and portraits. Frederic also was a photographer capturing images of his environment, family, and friends. Some of Frederic's images are included in this collection. Frederic and Anna lived at 426 East 238th Street in The Bronx until they retired to Copake, New York later in life.

Description/Scope and Content

The collection consists of 144 photographs of the Dietrich family, whose roots in The Bronx go back to family patriarch Heinrich (Henry) Ludwig Dietrich. A large portion of the photographs come from Morrisania, where the Dietrich family lived for many decades. Some photographs of the family of Frederic Dietrich, one of Henry L. Dietrich's sons, come from Brooklyn, and other family photographs document trips to various places in Upstate New York, mainly along the Hudson River. There is also one newspaper clipping on the 50th anniversary of Frederic and Anna Dietrich and genealogical information provided by the donor, Jan S. Cunningham.

Provenance

The Dietrich Family photograph collection was donated to The Bronx County Historical Society by Jan Schick, Jill Schick, and Gary Schick on March 17, 2021.
