Biography

Phil Newsum is a noted jazz and Latin percussionist who played in various bands in the 1950s and 1960s, including the Hugo Dickens Band, the Vicentico Valdés Orchestra, the Tito Puente Band, the Tito Rodríguez Band, and others. Although Phil himself neither was born or lived in The Bronx, he played with many Bronxite musicians and in various Bronx venues.

Description/Scope and Content

The collection consists of 87 photographs taken by Phil Newsum, or given to him, during performances around York City and the Catskills with various Latin jazz bands, 1950s–1960s, including the Hugo Dickens Band, the Vicentico Valdés Orchestra, Machito Orchestra, Tito Puente Band, Tito Rodríguez Band, and others.

Provenance

The Phil Newsum photograph collection was donated to The Bronx County Historical Society by Phil Newsum through Maxine Gordon in 2006.
