Biography

Bill Bigelow taught high school social studies in Portland, Oregon, for almost 30 years. He is the curriculum editor for Rethinking Schools magazine and is co-director of the Zinn Education Project. He has written or co-edited numerous books on teaching, including Strangers in Their Own Country: A Curriculum on South Africa (Africa World Press), The Power in Our Hands: A Curriculum on the History of Work and Workers in the United States (Monthly Review Press), Rethinking Columbus, Rethinking Our Classrooms (volumes one and two), A People’s History for the Classroom, The Line Between Us: Teaching About the Border and Mexican Immigration, and A People’s Curriculum for the Earth: Teaching Climate Change and the Environmental Crisis (all published by Rethinking Schools).

Description/Scope and Content

The collection consists of two series. The first comprises prominent radical publications of the U.S. New Left during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including Liberation, edited for much of its existence by David Dellinger, Bayard Rustin, Sidney Lens, Roy Finch, A. J. Muste, and Glen Gardner, and later run by Pam Black, Harvey Flock, Paul Rogat Loeb, and David Rosen; Radical America, founded by Paul Buhle and Mari Jo Buhle, veteran activists in Students for a Democratic Society; Ramparts, an illustrated magazine that grew out of the U.S. Catholic Left in the early 1960s and was the first publication to print the diaries of Che Guevara and Eldridge Cleaver; Seven Days, a short-lived publication started by David Dellinger after the Vietnam War as a kind of Time magazine for the U.S. Left; and Socialist Revolution/Socialist Review, founded by James Weinstein and closely association with the New American Movement and, after merging with Michael Harrington’s Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee in the early 1980s, the Democratic Socialists of America.

The second series includes assorted newsletters, papers, pamphlets, and other publications associated with the U.S. New Left, especially focusing on the Middle East, the oil industry, U.S. imperialism, and New York.

Authors whose pieces appear in these publications who were born, lived, and/or organized in The Bronx include Murray Bookchin, Mark Naison, and Stanley Aronowitz. The Bronx is also treated sporadically in various pieces, including Vivian Gornick’s coverage of the Co-Op City rent strike in Liberation 19/8–9 [1976].

Provenance
