Biography

Millicent S. Thayer is a lifelong activist who has been involved in a variety of grassroots organizations and political movements across the country. She was an editor and contributor to the periodical published by the North American Congress on Latin America. She was also involved with the New American Movement, a democratic socialist organization that emerged from some currents of the New Left in the early 1970s. In 1983, what remained of the New American Movement combined with the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee to form the Democratic Socialists of America. By this point in time, the donor had left the New American Movement and was involved briefly with Line of March, one of the small groups that comprised the New Communist movement.

Description/Scope and Content

The collection is organized in the following six series:

1) General Radicalism, which is comprised of subject files, stray periodicals, and single publications associated with radicalism, primarily in the U.S. during the 1960s–1980s.

2) Dollars & Sense, which includes many issues of Dollars & Sense, a magazine started by the Union for Radical Political Economics, as well as single publications from the collective.

3) Health/PAC, which contains issues of a regular newsletter produced by the Health Policy Advisory Center (Health/PAC), as well as single publications by the center.

4) Monthly Review, which includes issues of the independent socialist periodical, Monthly Review.

5) North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA), which comprises many issues of NACLA's regular periodical as well as single publications by the organization.

6) New American Movement (NAM), which includes many issues of NAM's newspaper and theoretical journal as well as some administrative files from the organization.

Provenance
