Administrative History

The Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences, which was reincorporated as The Bronx Society of Science and Letters in 1974, began during discussions concerning the founding of the Bronx Free Library held in 1900–1901. The Free Library was ended when the Tremont Branch of the New York Public Library was established. At one of the final board meetings of the Free Library, however, The Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences was proposed. Five days later, the Society was established in a separate, larger meeting. It was originally named The Bronx Society of Arts, Sciences, and History, though this longer name only stuck for a few years.

For approximately the next fifty years, the Society fulfilled its purpose of developing and encouraging the study of arts and sciences in the borough through the dissemination of information in lectures, exhibitions, meetings, addresses, and classes. Of particular interest to members of the society were the history, national features, and people of The Bronx. The Society was heavily involved in arranging the city’s purchase of Poe Cottage, a former Bronx domicile of the poet Edgar Allan Poe, and restored and refurbished the house after it came into the Society’s custody in 1913.

By 1950, the Society’s membership was in decline, and it reached and agreement with the Bronx Board of Trade to oversee its reorganization and lead a membership drive. The agreement was both short-lived and unsuccessful.

In 1974, the Society was revived under the leadership of Dr. William C. Woolfson and soon thereafter changed its name to The Bronx Society of Science and Letters. Within a year, however, the newly constituted Bronx Society of Science and Letters became embroiled in a battle with The Bronx County Historical Society over guardianship of Poe Cottage, a battle the Historical Society eventually won. Poe Cottage has been administered by The Bronx County Historical Society since 1976 under a license agreement with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

Description/Scope and Content

The collection documents the history and activities of The Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences/The Bronx Society of Science and Letters. Materials include correspondence, minutes (1905–1912 and 1932–1949), printed transactions of The Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences (c. 1906–1919), lecture programs (1930s–1940s), financial records, and as well as documents from The Bronx Society of Science Letters (1974–1993).

The collection is divided into the following three series:

1) Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences (BSAS) Correspondence, Documents, Publications and Reports: which contains correspondence, minutes (1905–1912 and 1932–1949), printed transactions of The Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences (c. 1906–1919), lecture programs (1930s–1940s) and Poe Cottage Documents.

2) Bronx Society of Arts and Sciences (BSAS) Bank Statements and Minute Books: General Files, which contains bank statements, minute books, membership documents.

3) The Bronx Society of Science and Letters (BSSL): which contains general correspondence and documents.

Provenance

Materials in the BSAS Collection appear to have come from multiple sources, though explicit documentation is lacking. The earliest records seem to have been transferred to the Bronx Board of Trade and were likely entrusted to The Bronx County Historical Society upon the donation of records from that organization. A smaller portion of the BSAS Collection, covering 1974–1993 (after the organization was reorganized under the new name), was evidently gathered by Gary Hermalyn, Lloyd Ultan, and other members or agents of The Bronx County Historical Society.
