Administrative History
The Bronx Star, in operation 1908–1925, was an organ of the Bronx Democratic Party and thus assumed an editorial stance largely sympathetic to the local Democratic Party machine and its platform. The broad outlines of the paper's editorial stance thus included the promotion of a supposed "harmony" between capital and labor (provided that the laborers were white and "kept to their place"); an anti-imperialism that was largely motivated by a kind of white nativism (rather than any robust solidarity with the people being colonized abroad); a friendliness towards real estate interests; close ties with Tammany Hall; and a concern, whether real or feigned, with corruption, which was allegedly rampant under Louis F. Haffen's tenure as borough president. The paper, nevertheless, provides an excellent snapshot of the political and economic interests that gave shape to The Bronx as it underwent rapid growth and industrialization during the first decades of the twentieth century.
Description/Scope and Content
The collection comprises 46 relatively fragile issues of The Bronx Star, all from 1908, the first year of the newspaper's publication. Only vol. 1, no. 7 and vol. 2, no. 44 are missing in their entirety, though a few issues have the occasional missing page or column.
Provenance
The provenance of this collection is unknown. The papers were discovered by Dr. Steven Payne on May 13, 2021 in a storage closet in the library.
