Administrative History

The Decatur Democratic Club, located on 3230 Bainbridge Avenue, was one of the most active local Democratic Party clubs in The Bronx during the second half of the twentieth century. Its leading members included, for instance, John F. Murray, who held various high-level posts in Bronx municipal government; William Kapelman, a New York State Assemblyman and State Supreme Court Justice; and Jerrold (“Jerry”) and Harriet Windman, who were leaders in multiple community-based organizations in the Norwood and Bedford Park areas of The Bronx. Indeed, a portion of Van Cortlandt Avenue East, between East Mosholu Parkway North and East Mosholu Parkway South, was named in honor of Jerry Windman in 1996.

This collection documents the close ties between the Decatur Democratic Club and other organizations in the community, including Assumption Security Patrol, a volunteer community-policing group; the Mosholu Civic Association, which was eventually succeeded by the Bedford Mosholu Community Association; Our Lady of Angels Parish, located at 2860 Sedgwick Avenue; other Bronx Democratic clubs; and a reunion group of the Quartermaster Corps from the 9th Infantry Division, which included multiple veterans from The Bronx.

Description/Scope and Content

This collection consists of correspondence, minutes, and member lists for the Mosholu Civic Association (1944–1964); souvenir journals for other Bronx organizations around The Bronx with which the Decatur Democratic Club was closely associated (1961–1981); and circulars for a reunion group of U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, 9th Infantry Division (1959–1972).

Provenance

The provenance of this collection is unknown, but based on ambiguous records from the 1980s, it seems likely that it came from Jerry and Harriet Windman, leaders in the Decatur Democratic Club and other community organizations in the Norwood area.
