Biography

Ira L. Zuckerman is a retired engineer and businessman who grew up in the High Bridge section of The Bronx. As a youngster during the mid 1950s he witnessed firsthand the construction of the Major Deegan Expressway in his neighborhood. The new highway resulted in the loss of a major portion of Washington Bridge Park, which was one of his favorite greens paces. This disruption was dwarfed, however, by the Cross Bronx Expressway construction, which literally tore his neighborhood apart. By 1965 most of the construction work was completed, including the interchange with the Major Deegan Expressway.

He graduated CCNY as a chemical engineer. He married, and shortly thereafter, began serving in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Okinawa and traveled extensively in Asia. After leaving the Army he worked several years as a chemical engineer, started a business with his younger brother, and was associated with a medical device company, retiring in 2008.

In 2005 his interest in the High Bridge neighborhood was rekindled while vacationing in Seattle. In a small antique shop thousands of miles from The Bronx, he came across an unusual early twentieth-century real photo postcard showing the High Bridge. This led to fifteen years of researching the history of and collecting memorabilia relating to the neighborhood where he had lived until adulthood.

Description/Scope and Content

The collection consists of 147 photographs and 117 stereoviews organized into 3 series. The first series [PH-ZUCKERMAN.1.1–52] comprises the initial 52 photographs and documents the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway as well as connected arteries and bridges, 1949–1965. The second series [PH-ZUCKERMAN.1.53–147] includes the remaining 95 photographs and documents High Bridge and Washington Bridge and the surrounding neighborhoods on both The Bronx and Manhattan sides of the Harlem River. In these first two series, some of the photographs are duplicates from collections belonging to various institutions and organizations, including The Bronx County Historical Society, and some are entirely unique. The third series [PH-ZUCKERMAN.1.148–264] comprises the 117 stereoviews, which also document High Bridge and Washington Bridge and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Provenance

The Ira L. Zuckerman photograph collection was donated to The Bronx County Historical Society in two installments by Ira L. Zuckerman in July 2019 and April 2021.
