Biography

The Haffen family was one of the key political and business families in The Bronx during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Haffen Brewing Company was one of the largest and, for a time, most successful brewers in The Bronx during this period of time. Louis F. Haffen became the first Borough President of The Bronx and was very involved in giving shape to rapid transit, infrastructure, business, and real estate development during the first decades after the area became a borough of New York City. This particular collection contains mostly family documents and photographs from both the Schumacher and Haffen families, who were joined together through the marriage of Emilie Schumacher (the daughter of Emilie Schumacher née Krumm) and John Matthias Haffen Sr.

Description/Scope and Content

The Haffen family papers are divided into the following 5 series:

1) General, which contains general documents and print material associated with the Haffen family.

2) Writings by Louis F. Haffen about The Bronx, including his personal copy of 1 such publication.

3) Photographs, which comprises 40 mostly gelatin silver prints and 2 tintypes of the Haffen and Schumacher families.

4) Oversized photographs, which includes 5 oversized group photographs.

5) Oversized documents, which contains various large documents from the Schumacher family.

Provenance

The Haffen Family papers were donated to the Society by descendant Lori Haffen of Florida in February 2022. With this donation were included 16 pieces of custom engraved silverware from the Haffen family, 1 shadow box containing 3 pieces of campaign and parade paraphernalia belonging to Louis F. Haffen, and 1 item of Haffen Brewing Company memorabilia. These items are included in the collection of the Museum of Bronx History.
