Organizational History

J.H.S. 82, better known as Macombs Junior High School, opened in 1925 at 176th Street and Macombs Road in The Bronx. Throughout the school’s existence, it gained a reputation for rigorous scholarship, and its annual journal, Scholarship, extensively showcased student writing and regularly won awards, 1931–1963. After 1963, the journal was rebranded Explorer, and less student writings were featured. Macomb’s, along with other formerly high-performing schools in The Bronx, suffered greatly from city budget cuts to education and after-school programming in the 1970s. The school never recovered. During this period, Macombs became Macombs Community Junior High School 82. This lasted until the late 1990s, when Macombs was replaced with multiple smaller schools, as happened with other larger public schools in The Bronx during this point in time. As of June 2020, I.S. 232, C.I.S. 303, and The Academy for Language and Technology occupy the building at 1700 Macombs Road that formerly housed J.H.S. 82.
